Avon Valley

An hour’s drive from Perth lies the historic Avon Valley. This region is often known as gateway to the Wheatbelt and is riddled with charming town, pioneering history, green pastures and fertile waterways of the Avon river as well as an array of festivals and events.

Visit the vintage towns of Northam, Toodyay, York, New Norcia, Beverley, Goomalling and Brookton and you'll be rewarded with babbling brooks, green rolling hills and a distinct country charm.

The region is both historic and with the Avon River at its heart, offers many trail and outdoor experiences with waterfalls and rapids at every bend.

The Pioneer's Pathway self-drive trail is more than 200km starting at Toodyay and heading to Merredin in the wheatbelt, which follows the well-worn trail early prospectors travelled Kalgoorlie Goldfields. A similar route that starts at Northam, but would suit art enthusiasts, is also the first leg of the Public Silo Art Trail - with its mammoth grain silo art murals an awe-inspiring and contrasting feature to the pastures that surround them.

If you want to stick to the quintessential country towns, the heritage buildings, museums and urban heritage walk trails, are very rewarding and found in York, Toodyay, Goomalling and Northam.

Home to the well-known Avon Descent - an adventure river race which has been running for almost 50 years, with competitors paddling or speed-boating down the Avon River from Northam to Perth. Though held every year in August, it's not the only time to take in the country life and rich riverbanks that the region has to offer. In fact, the region has much to offer all year round, with picnic spots, wildflowers, self-drive and heritage options.
