Kalgoorlie & Goldfields

Historic buildings, character pubs and even the brothels of Kalgoorlie-Boulder are remnants of more than a century of gold rush history. This region is known often as the 'true outback' and is rich in its history.

Described as the real outback, the natural landscape consists of outback plains, huges deserts and salt lakes mixed in with rugged rocky outcrops while the area comes alive with colour during Springtime wildflower blooms.

The modern mining hub of Kalgoorlie and the Goldfields, offer a fascinating window into the history and heritage of gold rush days gone by.

For multi-day drive trails, you can't go past the 965 km Golden Quest Discovery Trail - which is suitable for 2WD vehicles and runs through Western Australia’s Goldfields from Coolgardie through to Laverton. The Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail is another one long-distance drive trail which extends back into the Perth Hills.

This true adventure drive explores the 1890’s goldrush region to witness classic pubs, remnants of vibrant communities, deserted and reinvigorated mining spots, hotels that were once the centre of thriving populations and interesting natural landscapes.

While in the heart of Kalgoorlie, why not embark on the Heart of Gold Discovery Urban Walk Trail - a virtual gold journey of discovery from outside Market Arcade to the Museum of the Goldfields, and discover the rich history of a city built on gold and its importance to Western Australia’s development and future.
