The Karri boya-k (Tree in the Rock) Picnic Area, set among the karri trees, almost has the feel of a cathedral, with the towering karris providing the domed roof.

The Karri boya-k (Tree in the Rock), after which the site has been named, is just 100 metres along a shaded walk.  Extending its roots down through a crevice, this mature karri clings to existence on a granite boulder. Karri and marri are the most dominant trees in this area, while karri hazel, karri wattle and tassel bush form part of the understorey. Australian Bluebell can be recognised by its small bell-like mauve flowers from October to February.

The Porongurup Ranges were devastated by fire in 2007 and in the years since the flora of the region has shown its resilience in its fight to return to its former glory. It is a well-known fact that in the years following a fire, wildflowers and orchids in particular flower profusely.  The Eucalyptus trees re-shoot and the moss and grasses start to grow again.

This part of the Porongurup Ranges is a beautiful spot to simply sit back and enjoy nature and watch as this place continues to flourish post-fire. From the Karri boya-k (Tree in the Rock) picnic area there are several walk trails to choose from, short 30 minute walks to more experienced bushwalks which take over five hours.
