Learn moreAbout Telephone Line Trail, Wooleen Station
The Telephone Line Trail is a 17.4km (or 10km) hike or mountain bike ride on Wooleen Station in the Shire of Murchison. It is a 17.4km trail if you choose to hike/cycle from the Wooleen Cafe and Reception. There is an alternative start/finish point at the end of the airstrip that reduces the distance to 10km.
In 1898 the next-door station Murgoo had a telephone line from Yalgoo, and by 1918 it arrived at Wooleen. Â It was a party line, which meant that many people along the way could (and did) listen in. Â It remained in operation until 1985. The remains of this telephone line can be seen as you traverse the first half of this trail after leaving the large airstrip. Keep your eyes trained for wire on the ground, large posts (standing and fallen over) and ceramic insulators.
At the half way point you can leave your bike and walk up a stony hill to admire the view. Afterwards, follow the path and wind amongst some beautiful granite before travelling through the mulga shrubs back to the large airstrip.
Check-in at the cafe before departure to ensure the track condition is suitable.Â
