Windan Bridge Loop, East Perth
About the Trail
Featuring diverse wildlife from birds and fish to river dolphins and even the odd bull shark, the river is an integral part of Perth’s identity. Ranging from the wide estuary in and around the city, to the narrower bush lined river upstream, it is possible to cycle from the river mouth in Fremantle to the upper reaches in the Swan Valley.
On this route, stop off on Herisson Island under the Causeway. It is home to a colony of Western Grey kangaroos which can be found in the southern enclosure of the island and are best sighted in the early morning or evening.
For a shorter option cross over from East Perth to the Optus Stadium using the Matagarup Bridge. The swan-inspired bridge was opened in 2018 to link East Perth with the new stadium. The landscaping in front of the stadium is lovely and includes two playgrounds including a massive nature-play area. You'll also find a large family-friendly pub.
The Windan Bridge loop is a section of just one of 12 riding routes from the Department of Transport's 'Ride around the Rivers' guide. Visit the Department's website for other guides to cycling around Perth and regional areas including Margaret River, Albany, Kalbarri and Rottnest Island.
