Built on the Dessert family farm just outside Kununurra, the small pot distillery and the building itself were entirely created by hand. It might not be the world’s prettiest still, but it’s ours. Our founder, Spike even taught himself to distil, with nothing more than a passion to make good, honest, rum. This was rum, done Spike’s way.

Crafting our spirits is a labour of love that requires skill, a steady hand and unwavering attention to detail. By distilling our own base spirit from Swan Valley Verdelho wine, we control the entire production, from grape to glass. It’s unconventional, but we think it’s work it. Come and try our spirits that are crisp, silky-smooth and filled with individuality. Stay for a cocktail or two, have a bite to eat or grab a bottle to go.

Learn moreAbout Western Australia Distillery Trail
Back in 1972, a Californian fellow by the name of Raymond ‘Spike’ Dessert III, arrived in the Ord Valley and went about setting up a number of agricultural enterprises, growing everything from pumpkins and onions to corn.
By 1999 Spike and his wife Kae, decided to diversify and started their distillery, The Hoochery that has gone on to produce award winning rum that is served in some of the best restaurants in Europe.
These days there are distilleries from one end of Western Australia to the other, each drawing on its unique location and landscape to style their products and labels; from the deep forests of the south to the rugged landscapes of the Kimberley, coastal climes and even right in the heart of the city.
The entire trail is 4500km and all on sealed roads, with the exception of a few country driveways.
