Moderate trail that may have short steep hills, rough surface, many steps or some rock hopping. Directional signage. Some bushwalking experience and moderate fitness required.
The start point for the trail is the carpark before the gates into the Reservoir. Note that the gates to the reservoir close at 5.00pm. In the heart of the Perth Hills, the Victoria Reservoir Trail is a hilly moderately difficult, six kilometre loop taking in the relics of the first dam ever constructed in Western Australia and the surrounding bushland. Admire the old dam wall as well as taking in the replacement Victoria Reservoir.
The Victoria Reservoir Trail is a challenging hike through a historic part of the Perth Hills. Taking in the ruins of the old Victoria Dam that was completed in 1891, enjoy exploring this important part of Western Australian history using the information boards provided. An area of the old dam wall has been preserved and a grassed picnic area has been created under the new Victoria Dam wall.
Starting at the top of the valley, the trail descends down into the catchment area and eventually takes you back up to the start point through scenic Australian bushland. Watch the bush come alive in spring as the wildflowers bloom in a variety of colours all over the forest floor.

This is a good walk but does have a long gravel road section - which is not my idea of a bush walk! There is an excellent bush track from the second car park down to the dam. The dam is an interesting place to see, as is the old dam wall remnant. After the long gravel road towards Bickley Dam, there is a sharp right hand turn just before the wooden bridge. This bit is not easy for some walkers as it is steep and rocky. This part of the walk is the Mason & Bird Trail. At the end of this section, you reach the first car park - which can also be the start of the walk (it has the info board there). If you go along the bitumen road a little (towards the dam again), you can pay your respects at the grave of Francis Weston, a two day old baby who died in 1876. I'm surprised this isn't mentioned on the Kalamunda walk notes.
All in all a good 2-4 hours walk depending on your pace, that would be so much nicer if it wasn't for the long gravel track section.

Walked this trail on the 17/2/18. Temperature was about 27. This is an easy trail with long sections of wide flat gravel track. There are a few short sections that are rocky but still easy. The trail is not well signed so MAKE SURE YOU PRINT OUT THE PDF map and instructions from the site and read them before you start as there are a few points where you can make the wrong turn. Better still load the GPS file from the site into your device. I did both and referred to them many times. There are a number of interesting sites along the way including the Victoria Dam, a historic timber bridge (which apparently is the "oldest surviving all-timber bridge in Australia") and a few old shacks. The bush is typical of the area including rocky outcrops. I'm a 54 year old male of reasonable fitness and it took me a total of 1 hr 45 mins. My moving time was 1 hr 24 mins. Total distance was 7.5 kms. Worth doing once but probably not twice although I will take my wife there as it is a good beginners trail.
