The Old Timberline and Sidings Rail Trails combine to form the 37 km Timberline Loop. You can choose a half day mountain bike ride or 2 day hiking trip, camping out along the way, following the path of wood powered steam driven locomotives from the forest to the Barrabup Mill and later Nannup Mill.

Starting from Foreshore Park, the first section of the trail, when hiked or ridden in an anti-clockwise direction follows the Munda Biddi Track and is also known as the 15 km Sidings Rail Trail. The trail is a wide smooth gravel path with a gentle uphill slope.

At the northern extremity of the loop you turn left and head south onto the 22 km Timberline Trail and back to the start. This section of the trail is a little hillier and passes through some lovely forest along the banks of the St Johns Brook. You will pass the Sleeper Hewers Campsite, the ruins of a 100 year old once spectacular railway bridge, Barrabup Pool where you can have a swim in the warmer weather and Workmans Pool before heading back into Nannup on mostly easy single track.

Camping is permitted at these three locations. The Sleeper Hewers Camp has a hut with bunk beds for 8 people, a rain water tank, toilets, picnic table and access tothe river for swimming.

Barrabup Pool and Workmans Pool have toilets and picnic tables provided.

There are several vehicle access points along the trail where you can choose to walk or ride a shorter section if desired.

Bushwalking experience recommended. Tracks may be long, rough and very steep. Directional signage may be limited.

Mountain Bike

Easy

Likely to be a combination of fire road or wide single track with a gentle gradient, smooth surface and relatively free of unavoidable obstacles. Short sections may exceed these criteria. Frequent encounters are likely with walkers, runners, horse riders and other cyclists. Suitable for beginner/novice mountain bikers in good health with basic mountain bike
skills and using off-road bikes.

Difficulty Notes

The trail classification of Grade 4 is due to the length of the trail rather than the difficulty

Had a wonderful experience out on these two trails as an overnighter. Slept at the clean and well maintained Sleeper Hewer's Hut after a highly enjoyable cruise along the Timberline Trail. The next morning we rode up to Jarrahwood for lunch at the hut there, then returned to Nannup mid-afternoon. Didn't see another soul and were very impressed with the track quality. Only tricky bit was finding the Timberline Trail a couple of times at the start. Would not reccommended doing it in reverse unless you want a leg workout.

Jarrahwood to Nannup, travelling along the Siding trail and then the Old Timberline Trail. This is a wonderfully long trail in the bush with a generally easy gardient, only one steep climb in this direction. Jarrahwood to Cambray Siding is downhill and very enjoyable passing over bridges. Plenty of wildflowers around the place. Remnants of the old railwayare visible. When we rolled onto the Old Timberline Rail trail we entered St John Brook Conservation park and followed alongside a flowing creek. The jarrah trees are taller in the area. Great picnic spot at Barrabup pool. Very scenic around this spot. From Barrabup pool there is a nice singletrack. From workers pool to Nannup there are quite a few trees fallen over which I'm sure will be taken care of in the coming weeks. A few large puddles and sandy patches but nothing too hard. Markers are sufficient but be sure to bring a map or GPS. Fantastic trail with lots of options to camp along the way or complete a loop starting and finishing at Nannup. Highly recommend overnighting in Nannup to really enjoy the area and start the trail early so you can have lunch in town.
