The Numbat Trail is the most challenging trail at Paruna Wildlife Sanctuary with several steep ascents and descents and numerous stairs to navigate. It's hard work, but the views are worth it if you are up for the challenge. Allow 3-5 hours of hiking and extra time if you like to sit and take in the scenery or stop to take photos.

The Numbat Trail follows the same path as the Quenda Trail with an optional spur loop. If the trail proves too challenging at this point, you can skip the extra loop and head back to the car park along the Quenda Trail.

There are numerous lookouts and seating provided along the trail as you pass through powderbark and wandoo woodlands, past stunning granite outcrops, amazing flowering shrubs and delicate wildflowers inluding several varieties of orchids; donkeys, white spiders pink fairies, and snail orchids.

From the numerous lookouts you can see along the Avon River Valley, the East -West Railway Line and Paruna Gorge.

The scenery changes along the spur loop. Extensive grazing has left an open parkland area of trees with little understorey. From the lookout at the western end of the spur loop you can see down into the Avon River Rapids.

Bird life is prolific along the trail and you are likely to see tiny blue wrens in the undergrowth and magnificent eagles circling above.

Great training session as you encounter hundreds of steps which work the legs Completed in 2 and a half hour trail run / hike. Will definitely return later in winter when the falls and creeks are running.

Done this many times and whilst the steps are an absolute killer on the knees the experience itself truly makes up for it. Have enjoyed it early mornings, late afternoons, in full bloom and when the rain has brought the waterfalls to life. Seen plenty of beautiful wildlife too.

Completed the track on 31 May 2017 and it is a challenging, fun and scenic trail. I'd recommend coming in after a big rainfall or later in winter as it is still a bit dry early on. It is a well marked track and the majority is sheltered. There are some exposed areas. An above average level of fitness is required as there are some bits with a steep switch backs and quite a significant elevation change overall. Allow a good 4 hours to complete the track + breaks.

Spotted at least 12 kangaroos (or they spot you first). Also saw echidnas and plenty of birds.

Access is approx. 50min from Perth

The Numbat Track is my favourite hike I've been on in the as a day trip from Perth. Very well maintained, challenging and beautiful scenery. I wish I had discovered years ago and I cannot wait to return during the wildflower season.

Allow 4 hours at reasonable pace with 30 lunch break. Well marked tracks with quite a lot of elevation change. Every kilometre has different vegetation and a different view. Very pretty, especially with the rivers flowing.
