The Knox Gorge Trail in Karijini National Park is a stunning hiking route that offers breathtaking views of the dramatic gorge and surrounding landscapes. The trail is a 2km return traill and typically takes 2 to 3 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to appreciate the scenery.
As you hike, you’ll encounter steep sections with rock scrambles that require a good level of fitness, but the reward is worth the effort. The trail features incredible geological formations, showcasing ancient rock layers that reveal the region’s geological history. Along the way, you may discover small waterfalls and natural pools, particularly during the wetter months, providing perfect spots for a refreshing dip.
The area is rich in diverse flora and fauna, with unique species adapted to the harsh environment. Starting from the Knox Lookout, hikers can enjoy a panoramic view of the gorge before descending into its depths. It's a fantastic option for those looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Karijini National Park while experiencing its geological wonders. Extreme trail with very rough surface, and may have very steep hills, arduous rock hopping or rock scrambling. Limited or no directional signage. For very experienced bushwalkers with navigation and emergency first aid skills, and high level of fitness.

What To Pack
What To Pack
Group B - Hiking & Long Distance Trails (Bushwalks and/or longer trails)
- Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen (SPF 30+)
- Insect repellent
- Plenty of drinking water (as a minimum carry and drink 1 litre of water per hour of walking, per person).
- PLB or satellite phone
- Clothing to suit the activity, environment and weather conditions.
- Map/ Compass, do not rely on your phone in remote locations.
- Snacks/ Meals to keep your energy levels up on longer walks
- Extra food and water in case of unexpected delays
- Rubbish bag to remove all your rubbish
- Reference material such as wildflower wildlife guides.
- Whistle (for emergencies, six short blasts per minute)
- Small trowel for toilet emergencies, and a few sheets of toilet paper in a small waterproof bag.
- Personal first aid kit (check that items are clean, properly sealed, have not exceeded expiry dates and that used items have been replaced).
- Torch/ Headlamp
- Binoculars and camera (optional)
Hazards & Warnings
Steep descents and ascents and rock scrambles on this trail, please stay on the trail and take your time. Please stand well back from cliff edges as they are loose, unstable, and drop to great distances.
Safety
Always check the Park Alerts website for closures and notices prior and during your visit to Karijini National Park.
The gorges at Karijini are prone to flash floods. If it rains while you are in the gorges, leave immediately. Do not enter any gorge if there is rain in the area.
The water in gorge pools can be extremely cold, especially between April and September, and hypothermia can occur. Do not dive or jump into the water as water depths vary and there may be submerged rocks or sticks.
Extreme heat is common in Karijini and temperatures can exceed 50°C from November to April. Bring plenty of water and drink small amounts regularly to avoid dehydration. Avoid heat stress and sunburn by wearing appropriate sun-mart clothing.

Knox Gorge Road carpark, at the end of Joffre Road, about 1 hours drive east of Tom Price.

Drone restrictions apply within Karijini National Park, read the fact sheet within the links section and please fly responsibly.
Glass and alcohol are not permitted in any gorges. Serious accidents have occurred.
