This is a dramatic gorge, full of colour texture and reflections and a great spot for a swim.

Hamersley Gorge is in the north-west of Karijini, further afield than the other gorges. Swirls of rock sweep down through the gorge and waterfalls rush into tranquil pools. There have been improvements to the site including sealed road access to the lower car park, a new constructed lookout, toilet and various infrastructure items.

There are a couple of walks around Hamersley Gorge. 

Hamersley Gorge Walk (Class 4) is a 1 kilometre, 1 hour return walk. One of the more difficult walks in the Gorge. Swirls of rock sweep down through the gorge and waterfalls rush into tranquil pools. 

Hamersley Waterfall Walk (Class 4) is a 400 metre, 30 minute return trip. This walk boasts ever changing light and astonishing colours and reflections which highlight the complex geological forces in the landscape. This walk begins as steps, follow the steep decent down to the pool at the base of the waterfall. There are some obstacles, a good level of fitness is recommended. Do not attempt to access upper pools.

Karijini is a bushwalker's delight, so while in the area try the many other walks including Knox Gorge Lookout, Knox Gorge, Joffre Lookout, Joffre Falls and Handrail Pool.

Hazards & Warnings

During summer, temperatures frequently top 50 degrees Celcius. Carry plenty of water at all times. Flash floods can occur – do not enter gorges if there is rain in the area. If it starts raining when you are in a gorge, leave immediately.

Safety

Leave gorge promptly if it begins to rain.

Do not dive or jump into water.

Avoid walking on wet rock.

The Karinjini Gorges are a must see for anyone who enjoys the ruggedness of Australia Outback. This walk is truly worth the effort and I have done it several times since the early 80's and the most recent in August 2022. I'm definitely not as agile and energetic as I was in the 80's so I am glad it is much easier to do these days as way back you had to work out how to get in and out on your own, now there are marked trails and steps. This does mean there are more people but the beauty of the place is unchanged, just do it.
