Kalbarri National Park

A vast and exciting place of varied sights along the Murchison River, from the rolling sandplains to the ocean cliffs, with the deep river gorges and rocky plateaus in between.

Kalbarri National Park surrounds the lower reaches of the Murchison River. The river has cut a magnificent 80km gorge through the red and white banded sandstone. Perched right on the cliff top, the two platforms of the Kalbarri Skywalk jut out over the gorge. The views from the Skywalk are incredible. Explore one of the many bushwalking trails that lead you down into the gorge and see the colour and splendour of the natural area.

Along the coast, wind and wave erosion have created impressive cliffs that plunge 100m to the ocean and the views up there are amazing. Explore the trails along the coastline, where you get panoramic views along sandstone cliffs, from the town of Kalbarri to the 200km expanse of the Zuytdorp Cliffs.

Spectacular wildflowers can be found all year, but for the best wildflower experience, plan your visit between August and October.

Getting There

Kalbarri National Park is located 580km north of Perth. The park is easily accessible and all roads are sealed. Trails can be found along the coastline south of the township, or east of town along the Murchison River Gorge. Standard park entry fees apply for Kalbarri National Park.

Trail Safety

Although Kalbarri winters are mild with temperatures ranging between 10°C to 20°C, summers can be hot, dry and windy. Be aware that when conditions are hot in Kalbarri town, temperatures can be much more extreme in the park, reaching up to 50°C. The cooler months are the most comfortable for exploring the park. In the warmer months, plan to visit the park early morning or late afternoon. Hiking in the river gorge is not recommended over the hotter months of November to March inclusive. During this period, the Loop Trail is closed from 7am and overnight hikes are not permitted.

Facilities

Toilets, lookouts, walk trails and picnic facilities are provided in the park. Bring adequate drinking water as none is available in the park and mobile phone reception can be variable. There is a kiosk at the Kalbarri Skywalk. Please note that caravans and trailers are not permitted on the road to the western gorges (Nature's Window, The Loop and The Skywalk).
