Drink water regularly – carry and drink at least 1 litre of water per person per hour and more in hotter weather. There is no drinking water in the park.
Avoid hiking in hot weather – the best months are May to August.
Hike – during the coolest times of day.
Wear a hat, loose long sleeved clothes, sturdy footwear and sunscreen – to minimise heat stress, sunburn and injury from rugged terrain.
Stay on the trail – follow the walk trail markers.
Be prepared – tell a trusted person of your plans and provide sufficient detail to them so they can get help if required.
Carry a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) – or satellite phone, it could save your life. Mobile phone coverage is extremely limited.
Moderate trail that may have short steep hills, rough surface, many steps or some rock hopping. Directional signage. Some bushwalking experience and moderate fitness required.
The Saddle Trail is an 800 metre return hike involving loose rocks, unstable and slippery surfaces and crosses a usually dry creek bed. A good level of fitness is needed to climb a moderate slope to the saddle that provides a view over the Lyons River valley to the north.
The stony path climbs gently to a cleft between two outcrops and is a good place for views. Located on the north west flank of Mount Augustus, the view to the west is over a natural basin known as The Pound.
Early pastoralists took advantage of this geographical feature to hold cattle before undertaking the difficult 12 day journey to Meekatharra.
Once at trails end you can get views towards the north over Lyons River Valley.
Mount Augustus Tourist Park is a friendly caravan park with unit accommodation and camping grounds, with hot showers, laundry and a BBQ campers' kitchen for self catering.

Mainly unsealed roads. Roads may be closed after heavy rain. Check conditions before travelling. Carry ample fuel, water and supplies to cope with all possible occurrences - see Group D list.

No camping or open fires in National Park or Pastoral Lease. No pets
