This trail is a little exposed so best done early in the day when it is cooler. Around sunrise is a good time for observing wildlife. The early morning sun also brings out the colours of the ranges made up of King Leopold sandstone, which is around 1.8 billlion years old.  The rugged rocky escarpment serves as a refuge for endangered mammals, such as the northern quoll.

There is plenty of wildlife, including a variety of snakes, so watch out for them.

You will see different kinds of birds in the more open savannah terrain as opposed to the denser enclosed riparian habitats. Different species of raptors are often seen rising on thermals above the range. While tiny finches are seen in small flocks eating seeds from grasses.
