Oxers Lookout, Karijini NP Oxers Lookout, Karijini NP

Bush Walk  in North West

(+3)
The Kimberley, The Pilbara & Karijini, Broome & Dampier Peninsula

  • Less than 1 hour
  • 0.5 km
    • Bush Walk Class 2

Easy trail with modified or hardened surface, and gentle hills or occasional steps. Clear directional signage. No bushwalking experience required. May be suitable for assisted wheelchair users (if ramps are provided at steps).

Starting at the Weano day use area, the 800 metre walk trail between Oxer and Junction Pool lookout is not to be missed. Many consider the view from Oxers Lookout to be one of the most spectacular sights in WA if not Australia. The walk trail over the plateau barely prepares you for the gaping hole that lays ahead.

If you do one thing in Karijini National Park, take the short 15 minute walk from the Weano car park to Oxers Lookout. Take a breath and peer over the edge. Sheer walls plunge 100 metres or more to the gorge floor of layered rock and languid pools. Just as well there is a secure safety railing because it comes up suddenly and can be quite dizzying.

For the geological minded, the lookout is a great location for witnessing the ancient natural elements that carved this massive gash in the red earth. The view looks over the junction of Weano, Red, Hancock and Joffre Gorges.

This is an easy walk for a beautiful view. But go slowly and look around as the end isn't the only beautiful view to be seen on the trail. Admire the white trees in the red landscape and look for the wildlife as well as other views into the gorges
