About the Trail
Starting at the interpretive trailhead in the carpark, make your way up the steep rocky stairs onto the flat hill of Mt Matilda, the highest peak within the Shire of Wongan-Ballidu. Follow the trail along the western side of the mesa to take in the views of wheat fields and Lake Hinds, before looping around to the north and eastern sides of the hill. Highlights include the views at speaker’s chair, gimlet gully and red barked gimlets growing in profusion below.
There are 9 lookouts and numerous interpretive panels along the trail highlighting various types of plants and other interesting features.
There is a shorter 4.8 km Wildflower Loop available. When hiking clockwise take the right hand track at the old wooden sign and follow the mallee fowl markers.
While visiting the area why not try the other short walks including Christmas Rock and Reynolds Reserve. Mt O'Brien lookout is on the other side of the main road to Mt Matilda.
