The 16km Lake Joondalup Curcuit is a well developed family friendly path around Lake Joondalup in Yellagonga Regional Park’s north. Lake Joondalup is a nature reserve and has a lot of wildlife including turtles, ducks and many other birds. Most of the banks are either swampland or reeds.

The path is a shared path for walkers and cyclists. Start at Neil Hawkins Park and walk/cycle in clockwise direction onto the shared path next to the jetty (great place to observe long-necked freshwater turtles).

Make your way around the lake and enjoy the magnificent flora and fauna. Wildlife to be observed include tiger snakes and dugites, kangaroos, fresh water turtles, as well as numerous waterfowl. The loop also takes in children’s playgrounds, the local golf course, a boardwalk and observation tower, as well as the historic site of Neil Hawkins Park and panoramic lake views. Have a rest at one of the great picnic spots and lookouts or let your children have a play at the playground.

Yellagonga Regional Park is easily accessible by walking, cycling, car, or public transport. It is an easy 30 minutes from the Perth CBD by car and serviced by five train stations on the Joondalup line; Greenwood, Edgewater, Currambine, Joondalup and Whitfords.

All paved and lots of road walking. When close to the lake, huge numbers of water birds and a lovely outlook. Good for wheelchair access. Lots of cyclists who were mostly very good. People need to pick up after their dogs, it was all over the place 💩

We took the train to Joondalup and walked 1.5km from the train station to Neil Hawkins Park at the Lake.
The northern and eastern sections of the trail were very disappointing due to many kms of walking beside roads with no shade and usually quite some distance away from the Lake. We were somewhat cheered though to see several Rainbow Bee-eaters.
Although the southern part of the trail skirts another busy road we were close to the water and noticed several Grebes nesting on floating platforms of water weeds and watched while one got up and turned her eggs.
The western side of the lake is by far the most enjoyable because we were walking through bush quite close to lake. All in all, we mostly enjoyed this trail and were pleased for the experience.

This was a really lovely walk. Well maintained trail and not too many people.
The north part is very confusing - I thought I'd come off the trail when I was walking along very busy roads for a long time. This is the only part of the trail that doesn't really work - though did take the opportunity to have a short break at the cafe instead of walking past...

Overall, great loop. The West side is amazing, with a nice track and beautiful views of the lake! The East side is being worked on, so the construction/fences were a bit of a nuisance, but it will be lovely when they are done. The North end of the loop is awful and confusing. We honestly thought we were lost when we started past the mini golf and onto Wanneroo Road - its silly that this stretch is included in this nature walk. The South end, particularly behind the Baptist Church, just seems wrong and confusing.

Great loop
The only let down was a small part when you had to ride alongside Wanneroo road and Joondalup drive, come on city of Joondalup let's finish the final North part of the ride around the lake.

I really enjoy this walk. Long but manageable even for a beginner. It takes about 3 hours to do the loop.

We were mum and kids, 6 and 8, cycling. Was a bit long but they managed and were rewarded on the way home for good effort.
Beautiful scenery: scents, sights andsounds. Ducklings were a highlight.
