Dark Sky

Discover trails across Western Australia where you can experience truly dark night skies, see the Milky Way and enjoy incredible stargazing far from city lights.

Western Australia’s wide open landscapes and low levels of light pollution make it one of the best places in the world to experience a truly dark night sky. Far from city lights, hundreds of thousands of stars become visible and the Milky Way stretches across the sky in a bright arc of light.

Many trails across regional WA offer incredible opportunities to slow down after sunset and enjoy the night. Plan your walk, ride or road trip so you can stay a little longer and watch the stars appear as darkness falls.

From autumn through spring the centre of the Milky Way is visible in the early evening sky, creating spectacular viewing and photography opportunities. On clear nights you may also spot familiar southern constellations such as the Southern Cross, bright planets shining above the horizon and the occasional meteor streaking across the sky.

Western Australia’s night sky changes throughout the year. Meteor showers bring bursts of shooting stars at certain times, while the phases of the moon influence how dark the sky becomes. Visiting around the new moon provides the best conditions for stargazing.

Wherever you explore, remember that darkness is part of the experience. Turn off unnecessary lights, give your eyes time to adjust to the darkness and enjoy the stillness of the night.
