Bickley Reservoir was originally constructed in 1920 with the purpose of supplementing Perth’s water supply. In 1936, the Reservoir was taken out of service and the water used for irrigation until 1944.  Following, Bickley Reservoir and the surrounding catchment area was set aside for recreational purposes.

Apart from bushwalking other activities in the area include mountain bike riding and horse riding. Facilities include barbecues, toilets and tap water. There is plenty of shade available and the wildflowers are on show in the spring months from September through to November.

The Bickley Reservoir Trail is quite a challenging trail, but as always offers some beautiful views overlooking the valley and Reservoir below as well as stretching out to the city afar. Beautiful Wandoo and Sheok forests compliment the granite outcrops as you walk along the ridgeline. The trail is 3.2km return with a large loop section.

Signage needs a little work but you can download a copy of the trail to help you along, the trail is setup to be done in a clockwise direction.

A little challenging especially in Winter when the steep ascents and descents can be pretty slippery but overall a nice enough trail.

Pretty much walking up a rutted 4wd track up a hill, barely any single track

Completed in early July, this walk felt a bit treacherous at times with steep ascents and descents. We felt very lucky that it had rained a few days before so the ground was just the right amount of sticky to provide some traction. Bone dry may have been just as scary as wet and slippery. Saw and heard a lot of cockatoos. Finished the hike in just under 2 hours but given the rigour we felt that we really earned a nice lunch aftewards.

We were lucky to walk this in January as it was a very cool day. Beautiful views, reasonably tricky terrain but clear paths, and yes, the descent from the summit was very steep and quite slippy, even when bone dry. The path was clearly marked and noted on the map and guide, we enjoyed the entire walk to ourselves, and all of us (Mum, Dad, two sons aged 10 and 7) had a lovely time and felt like we'd accomplished something without being wiped out.
