Trails WA has officially launched the Trails WA App, a new digital platform set to transform how Western Australians and visitors discover, navigate and experience the State’s world-class trails.
Developed with the support of Lotterywest and the WA Government, the app brings together official trail information, GPS navigation and rich storytelling in one official platform - helping trail users and visitors explore more than 1,000 of Western Australia’s official trails with confidence.
The launch marks a major milestone for the trails sector, addressing long-standing challenges around fragmented information, inconsistent mapping and limited access to cultural and environmental content.
“This is more than a navigation tool, it’s a platform that helps people connect more deeply with the places they visit,” said Trails WA Chairperson Suzanne Hillier.
“It brings together accurate mapping, cultural content and environmental knowledge to create a richer and more meaningful experience while on trail”.
Discover more beyond the trail
The Trails WA App introduces a new way to experience trails. Users can:
- Explore over 1,100 official trails across Western Australia
- Access GPS maps and navigation, even when offline through downloadable maps
- Discover Aboriginal cultural stories and connection to Country
- Learn about flora, fauna and geological landscapes
- Experience dark sky and astrotourism locations
- Connect with local trail-friendly businesses and destinations
By combining navigation with rich content, the app reflects Trails WA’s broader vision to help people find themselves in amazing places while fostering a deeper understanding of the landscapes they explore.
Supporting regional tourism and trail communities
With more than 60% of Western Australia’s trails located in regional areas, the app is expected to play a significant role in supporting nature-based tourism and local economies.
By improving trail discovery and accessibility, the platform encourages users to stay longer, explore further and engage with local communities, strengthening the impact of investment in WA’s trail network.
Importantly, the Trails WA App is free to download at launch, helping make outdoor recreation and trail exploration more accessible at a time when many Western Australians are experiencing increasing cost-of-living pressures and fluctuating fuel prices.
“Getting out on the trails remains one of the most affordable ways for people to stay active, connect with nature and spend quality time with family and friends,” Ms Hillier said.
“Whether it’s a short walk close to home or a weekend adventure in a regional community, the app makes it easier for people to discover accessible and affordable experiences across Western Australia.”
The app also supports key state priorities by:
- Increasing participation in outdoor recreation
- Improving trail safety and navigation
- Promoting Aboriginal culture and environmental stewardship
- Supporting regional visitation and Trail Town development
A trusted, official source for trail information
Unlike many existing platforms that rely on crowd-sourced data, the Trails WA App provides verified, official trail information developed in collaboration with land managers, Traditional Owners and sector partners. This ensures users can explore with confidence while supporting responsible and sustainable trail use.
