About Trails WA

Enriching Trail Experiences

At Trails WA, we believe the best way to make a connection with nature and disconnect from the everyday is through Western Australia's world class trails network.

Who we are

Trails WA Inc., is a not-for-profit association dedicated to enriching people's trail experiences - by making it simple for all types of trail users to find and experience all types of trails, safely and sustainably. Formed in 2012, Trails WA was initially a foundation under the National Trust of Western Australia and evolved into an independent incorporated body in 2017.

Whether you prefer seascapes or treescapes, a paddle or a bike,

there are infinite ways to enjoy Western Australia's high quality trail networks.

At Trails WA, we are here to help you find yourself in amazing places!

What we do

Trails WA exists to provide information, marketing and advocacy of trails in Western Australia and advocate for trails sector. We work collaboratively with our partners in State Government, recreation, environment and the community to enrich people's trail experiences.

We are a values-led organisation that supports a website of over 800 official trails and networks and we create and lead online social communities.

Our values drive us:

  • INCLUSION: Being independent and inclusive - we encourage accessibility to trails and do not discriminate.
  • BEING EASY TO DEAL WITH: By leveraging the knowledge we have and through our access to official data, we create engaging and simple communications.
  • SAFETY & SUSTAINABILITY:  Reflecting the need to promote safe experiences, recognise Aboriginal culture and ensuring a positive experience is had by all.

Why it matters

There's no better way to explore nature. Panoramic mountain top views, tranquil lakes, thick old growth forests, ancient gorges and waterfalls and breathtaking coastal scenery are just a few of the many outdoor experiences you'll find hiking in Western Australia.

Whether you're there for the serenity, a slower pace and the vistas or you're all about trail blazing on your bike through wildly unique forest and coastal trails, getting on a trail is by far the best way to disconnect from the urban world and reconnect with your true self and your tribe.

We believe that promotion and advocacy for Trails in WA matters because:

  • We want to encourage participation
  • We want to ensure the safety of trail users
  • We want to ensure that the environmental and cultural impacts of trails are well managed.
  • Providing rich and accurate information is key to ensuring trail users have a safe, sustainable and quality trails experience.
  • Trails are considered a natural asset and economic driver for many regional townships and local urban economies

Rich and accurate information is key to ensuring trail users have a safe, sustainable and quality trails experience. The trails data on our website is official, sanctioned trail information supplied by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and Local Government. We have connections with Trail Managers to ensure accuracy, which makes Trails WA different from other non-official trails sites and apps.

  • Trails are considered a natural asset and economic driver for many regional townships and local urban economies. The tourism and recreation industry-related opportunities that can be driven from trails can assist with sustainable growth of these local economies.

Start planning your outdoor adventure by viewing the list of trails or use the regional map as a reference point to where each hike is located.

The upload of trails to the website is an ongoing process with much of the trail information collated by volunteers.  This requires recording the route (GPS coordinates), taking high quality photos and writing a description for the trail (data sheet and instructions provided).
