The lookout affords views to the western side of the Fitzgerald River National Park, from West Mt Barren in the east and to Gordon Inlet in the south and Twertup to the north. The Royal hakea grows here along with a variety of banksias.

Mt Maxwell was probably named after George Maxwell who accompanied the botanist James Drummond in 1847, when he discovered the Royal hakea.
