Derdbe-gerring Banan Trail, Mirima NP, Kununurra
About the Trail
While staying in Kununurra, it’s well worthwhile exploring Mirima National Park. The national park is a wildlife lover’s paradise with plenty of birds. There are also frogs near water and snake sightings are relatively common.
There are several short walk trails including the short but feature packed Derdbe-Gerring Banan trail. The trail is quite steep with steps and uneven surfaces, hence its relatively high Grade 4 rating. The trail ends at a lookout, which offers great views of the town and Ord River Valley.
The sandstone ranges and thickly vegetated valleys are stunningly beautiful, especially early morning or late afternoon. The rocky outcrops geology is not dissimilar to the ‘beehive’ formations in the Bungle Bungles in Purnululu National Park. It is best to walk early morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the very worst of the heat.
The first part of the trail is a wheel chair friendly loop with interpretive signage.
